I think the issue is a bit more nuanced. Graphics have gotten so good that it is relatively easy to get character animations which sit in the uncanny valley.

The uncanny valley is bad. You can have beautiful, photorealistic graphics everywhere, but if your characters are in the uncanny valley, the overall aesthetic is more similar to a game which didn’t have the photorealism at all.

In the past, the goalpost was at a different spot, so putting all the resources towards realism still wouldn’t get you into the valley, and everyone just thought it looked great.

Yeah, I think they just want to lose at this point. Maybe that was always the point.

Same is true of many other AI assistants. They’re really neat as a technical exercise, or for a bit of fun for 10-20 minutes. But when it comes to folding them into workflows, the utility is harder to grasp.

Couple that with the extreme energy requirements of these systems, the worries about where the training data comes from, plus the fact that it feels like every single corporation is just flailing around “AI” because they see dollar signs… I’m pretty over it.

So that the suits stop regurgitating the same stuff all the time.

Again, you seem to have missed the point of the comment. I did not deny that Steam needs improvement. Things can be symptoms of larger problems, and calling that out is not whataboutism (to the contrary, the purpose of whataboutism is to suggest that there is no problem with item X – not that item X is a symptom of item Y).

I think you missed the first sentence of my comment. Games have been blamed above other media for years and years and years. That is not whataboutism.

I never suggested that Steam doesn’t need improvement. There is extremist content being posted. But it is definitely part of a larger (frankly, much more obvious) problem. Calling attention to a root cause is just not whataboutism.

I still regularly use my original Steam Controller – for the trackpads. It allows me to do M+KB strategy gaming from the couch.

This lacks the killer feature, IMHO, given that I can use any of a wide variety of regular Bluetooth controllers for stuff with controller support.

SMS in Signal was never secure (it’s SMS), and so it was removed. Now I have private messaging in Signal, and if some one sends me an SMS, it shows up in my stock texting app. No false sense of security and it’s very easy to use 2 apps.
