  • I really like Lemmy but it is true that it does have some issues attracting active contributors or commentators. I think some of this might be because it’s a little more explicitly political as a project. Some of it is because it’s newer I think. Some of it is because less people use stuff like reddit to begin with, so it’s kind of a niche audience.

There’s been issues with troll brigading in the past which I think makes the community a little more insular by default.

I think opt-in algorithmic/viral design would be nice. Sometimes I like having a neural network tell me what posts I might be interested in.

A decade ago I was on rss feeds all the way. But over time I followed so many people it became very hard to get through all the content in a day. Having an algo help push stuff tk the top was a value add for me. Yes advertisers distort this stuff which is why it should be opt in and should have extensive levers for the user to control.

  • I think this problem with spam arises from the design of email as you indicate and I think it’s a pretty serious problem. Kids these days don’t use email and they use it less and less because in part messaging platforms have features that email doesn’t. Businesses turn increasingly towards things like slack for similar reasons. Want to hold a group conversation by email? It’s a mess. Maybe you don’t want to be part of the email chain. Too bad! You can’t leave someone clicking reply all.

Spam and the inability to really properly block is another issue.
