A dating-style app for platonic relationships. Just a place to define yourself on a wide variety of criteria and meet up with like-minded people IRL just for fun.

I know it’s been tried before, and the weakness is always horny people who misuse the app, but I would love to easily coordinate a meet up with some randos for a coffee or a round of beers every once in a while without it being some kind of community-specific meetup.

I’ve considered in the past the design of an open-source (possibly federated?) dating app and there are very complicated disincentives in a system that is not algorithimically mediated.

I believe the format of the dating app, let alone a dating app for platonic relationships, shouldn’t be proposed again unless you want to make money out of it.

The idea of a tunnel 1 to 1 across space to engage with another, isolated individual is not something that should be pursued further. This problem should be addressed by rebuilding social environments (even online, even through new forms of software if necessary) where you know you can meet like-minded people filtered by social dynamics that keep out toxic and predatory people (or horny people if you are in for a platonic thing) through swarm intelligence, social pressure and community values. We need a new grammar of online communities to build communities where flirting and getting to know people beyond a superficial level and with romantic or sexual intentions is feasible without attracting predators, groomers and other people that often target sex-positive or “dating-positive” online communities.

Federated code collaboration / issue tracking. IE a federated gitea.

Federated marketplace, ie a federated amazon or etsy.

Federated store / product / service reviews.

Gitea/Forgejo is currently adding AP federation (under a NLnet grant) and it is expected to be available rather soon (next 3 months or so).

What do you think of Particl? Never tried it myself.

      Federated code collaboration

You will know Radicle, but it’s in early development.

Haven’t heard of that, but it looks like its crypto-spam with a shiny website.

Radicle looks interesting… a p2p network for publishing and sharing git repos. But it doesn’t look like it has issue tracking, or pull requests, which are the main things a federated system needs to beat github dominance.

How would you organize the payment processing in a federated marketplace?

Radicle is still in its earky stages. Don’t know where they are heading, but, yes, it’s far from being perfect :-)

I wonder if there would be a way to establish trust and enhance logistics with a federated marketplace. In terms of trust, that would be both in terms of payments (cannot use payment info to steal money) and actually delivering the item. Then with logistics, one of the benefits that Amazon has is that it can use its large scale to keep a local warehouse full of goods where it predicts they will be needed.

But yeah, good idea, I like it.

I think we need a media, search results, and just overall content filter which filters out bullshit but is completely customizable based on keywords or sources and in some kind of overlay over a browser. Like you’re on a messenger and someone uses a dogwhistle, the filter will come up and be like “fuck this guy and here’s why”. Like having a leftist wiki right there in case you miss something you don’t already know about. Or you’re searching results on a news subject and a propaganda source comes up, it should get crossed out and labeled as propaganda. Kind of like a spam filter or an ad blocker but for bullshit in general not just specifically ads and spam.

Well, a lot of stuff I’d say. For example:

    • A federated structured debate platform.
    • A (good) biochemical pathway simulator.
    • Open-source ASIC design automation tools.
    • Software to help research on diplomacy/politics via game theory.
    • More cool games why not!

How would it be different from Lemmy (at the rights posts&communities)?

You are absolutely right… I posted a while ago about a solid-state lab project I was working on. I made pretty large steps towards that, but I eventually realized that it would only make a difference if I could leverage the latest technology. So I’ve spent the last months working on a smaller-scale project (a very low-cost ultrasound imaging machine) and finally I’m starting to see some tangible results; I will build and present the final prototype in collaboration with my university, but the important thing here is that I’m getting both experience and reputation, plus I’m convincing a friend (an engineering lab researcher) to join an eventual, larger-scale, solid-state lab project. The idea is not to get “something that works and is open source”, as it was before, but to research cutting-edge technology.

How would you like to define “debate” in this context? What should a structure of a debate be?

What benefits does federation bring to a debate platform? Are there debate platforms that you prefer right now that could be improved by federation?

The issue with debate is that it’s an inherently hard problem. Every platform tries to solve it in a different way (voting consensus, etc.). I think federation would help prevent platform-introduced biases.

Thanks that looks like a good resource. An AI consultant could be built really cheaply or really expensive. The cheap version would be an indexed search engine over documents that returns search results. The expensive version would be a language model fine tuned on those documents that generates natural language responses. The hard part is collecting all the documents. This seems like a useful project!

Elections of all kinds. I’ve used pen and paper as well as a silly script to choose as a group what to eat, what movie to watch, what book to read, and who to elect as president of a club. The issue is it takes time to do it, and every bit of friction makes it more likely someone will object to a new and different electoral system, even if it is better.

So a good Majority Judgment webapp or something like that would be used for fast elections of all kind.

Bonus points if it’s FLOSS, so that it gets more legitimacy.
